Message Trace in Exchange admin shows what happened to a message, delivered or not, by which rule or policy.

Try this first

  1. Exchange admin > Mail flow > Message trace
  2. Search by sender, recipient, or message-id
  3. Trace covers 30 days by default, longer with extended trace
  4. Per result, 'View details' for the rules and policies that fired

When to bring us in

For traces older than 30 days, use extended/historical trace, report arrives within a day.
